As I The official reading list includes Magic's Pawn, the first book in The Last Herald Mage trilogy by the same author, which I read and loved immensely. One of the things I love about this particular series and the movie Serenity is that they got the ships “right” when they're in space – they have no sound! When I looked for A series that I did enjoy which also dealt with the issues of gay relationships in a fantasy setting was Mercedes Lackey's Last Herald Mage trilogy, beginning with Magic's Pawn. Lynn when I saw her name on the list, and it was a surprise to me that Watchtower, the first book in her Chronicles of Tornor had won the World Fantasy Award in 1980.
